Diesel Costs Reshape Budgets For U.S. Transport Firms

Diesel Price Surge Puts U.S. Freight Budgets Under Strain

Diesel prices are climbing fast enough to reorder freight budgets, with more than half of U.S. transport firms now spending a fifth or more of their monthly costs on fuel. The squeeze is forcing operators to delay technology upgrades and recruitment in favor of keeping trucks on the road.

Rising Fuel Costs Disrupt Strategic Spending

The latest Tech.co survey of 264 logistics professionals shows that more than half (52%) of U.S. transport and shipping companies now allocate at least 20% of their operating budgets to diesel. Within that group, nearly a quarter spend between 20–29%, 16% spend 30–39%, and 12% are spending over 40% on fuel alone.

The spike follows an 11.3% jump in crude oil prices in June, driven by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. While fuel has always been a core cost, the scale of recent increases is forcing companies to redirect funds from longer-term priorities, such as driver recruitment, technology adoption, and sustainability initiatives, toward immediate operational needs. According to Tech.co’s research, concern over diesel costs reached a three-month high in July, with 20% of respondents naming it their single biggest challenge.

Operational Budgets Under Dual Pressure

Rising fuel prices aren’t hitting companies in isolation. Logistics operators are also contending with escalating vehicle maintenance costs, ongoing driver shortages, and tariff uncertainty. In the survey, 20% of respondents cited vehicle upkeep as their top priority, 17% pointed to managing financial pressures, and just 14% were focused on staffing retention and recruitment, even though 24% said labor shortages were a critical concern.

This short-term financial triage is limiting investment in technologies that could ease cost pressures over time, such as route optimization tools, alternative fuel systems, and automated maintenance monitoring. Industry data suggests that firms with higher digital adoption are better able to mitigate fuel cost spikes by dynamically adjusting routes, loads, and driver schedules, capabilities that remain out of reach for many operators facing budget freezes.

Why Fuel Cost Strategies Need a Rethink

Fuel price volatility is not a new challenge, but its current scale and speed of change are reshaping budget priorities in ways that could have lasting effects. Companies focused solely on month-to-month survival risk falling further behind competitors who are able to preserve or accelerate efficiency investments during cost surges. Recent trade reports indicate that operators in markets with stronger hedging programs and diversified energy strategies are weathering price shocks with less disruption, a signal that U.S. transport firms may need to embed fuel risk management more deeply into core planning rather than treating it as a crisis response.
