FedEx Pilots Circular Logistics Model To Reduce E-Waste

A circular logistics pilot led by FedEx Supply Chain in partnership with Pyxera Global is demonstrating how logistics operators can play a direct role in addressing the global e-waste problem. Operating from a supply chain facility outside Nashville, Tennessee, the initiative applies reuse, repair, and certified recycling practices to electronic materials that would otherwise be discarded.

Rather than building standalone recycling systems, the pilot embeds circular processes into existing warehousing and reverse-logistics operations. This approach has created an early framework for broader e-waste collection across Middle Tennessee and the wider southeastern U.S., using established logistics assets to intercept waste before it reaches landfill.

Embedding Circularity into Reverse Logistics

The pilot was designed to test how logistics networks can help close the loop on electronics that typically exit supply chains after first use. According to the 2022 Global E-Waste Monitor, 62 million tonnes of electronic waste were generated globally in a single year, yet only 22.3% was recycled. Common devices such as laptops, mobile phones, tablets, and servers contain critical minerals that must be newly mined when recovery rates remain low.

By treating e-waste as a recoverable flow rather than an end-of-life byproduct, the program explored how collection, sorting, refurbishment, and responsible recycling can be integrated into day-to-day logistics operations. The initiative received a 2025 Leadership Award in the Circular Economy category from the Sustainable Purchasing Leadership Council, which cited the project’s practical recommendations for scaling circular logistics within real supply chains.

The recognition reflects a broader shift toward operational sustainability, where circular economy principles are implemented at the facility and network level rather than remaining aspirational or limited to pilot-scale trials.

Scaling Recovery Through Regional Networks

Building on the pilot, Pyxera Global has launched the Circular Supply Chain Coalition to expand recovery and reuse of critical minerals found in electronic waste across multiple U.S. regions. Additional funding has supported the development of place-based demonstration hubs in the Southeast and Rocky Mountains, while also contributing to a broader network aligned around reducing electronic waste and accelerating remanufacturing.

The coalition model focuses on local and regional recovery, linking e-waste collection with downstream remanufacturing and reuse. This place-based approach is intended to shorten material loops, reduce dependence on virgin resource extraction, and improve resilience in supply chains that rely heavily on scarce minerals.

Operational Scale and Waste Diversion

The pilot benefits from the scale of FedEx Supply Chain’s existing operations. The company provides warehousing, fulfillment, and reverse-logistics services across sectors such as retail, healthcare, and automotive, processing more than 475 million returns each year. Across roughly 300 facilities, its recycling programs achieve a landfill diversion rate of 98.62%, offering customers a way to improve waste outcomes while reducing associated emissions.

Industry observers note that reverse logistics is becoming a more central part of the procurement and supply lifecycle. Demonstrations like this show how e-waste collection and recycling can be scaled beyond isolated pilots by leveraging the same infrastructure already used to manage returns and end-of-life products.

When Circular Logistics Becomes a Supply Lever

What distinguishes this effort is not only waste diversion, but the way logistics operations can quietly alter the economics of material recovery. By embedding circular flows into high-volume fulfillment and returns networks, recovery costs are absorbed into existing movements, narrowing the gap between recycled and newly mined inputs. As recent trade reports continue to highlight supply constraints and geopolitical risk around critical minerals, this kind of operational integration suggests that circular logistics may evolve from a sustainability initiative into a structural supply advantage.
