The Teamsters Canada Rail Conference has issued a strike notice to Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC), warning that approximately 3,300 union-represented workers will cease services from Thursday unless a new contract is agreed upon. In response, CPKC has announced it will lock out all union employees from the same day.
Canadian National Railway has also announced its intention to lock out about 6,000 union-represented workers from Thursday unless a new labor agreement is reached or the union agrees to binding arbitration.

A work stoppage at Canada’s primary rail carriers could have far-reaching effects on supply chains, warn logistics experts. The Railway Association of Canada reports that over 900,000 metric tons of goods are transported daily on Canada’s railways.
The looming service disruption has prompted CPKC and Canadian National to initiate shipping embargoes last week to prevent leaving critical freight unattended. Both rail carriers have noted that shippers are diverting freight to other transportation modes, including trucking, in anticipation of a work stoppage.
