REWE Adopts Robotic Kitchens To Cut Store Costs

Retailers worldwide are looking beyond software and self-checkout toward robotics that directly reduce store-level operating costs. In Germany, REWE West has launched its new Fresh & Smart concept in partnership with Circus SE, deploying autonomous cooking systems that can prepare fresh meals around the clock with minimal human intervention. The Düsseldorf Heerdt location marks the first public integration of Circus’s CA-1 robotic kitchen, with additional stores already planned.

The system requires about an hour of human oversight per day and operates continuously, allowing REWE to run food production without conventional staffing or extended energy usage peaks during rush periods. The company says the model enables up to 95% labor-cost reduction and materially lowers energy draw per meal by using induction heating, automation-controlled cooking cycles, and integrated self-cleaning functions.

Robotics Come for the Last Holdout: Fresh Food

For years, automation in grocery has focused on logistics, forecasting, and checkout. Amazon Fresh stores use sensors and computer vision to cut queue times, Kroger has leaned into automated fulfillment via Ocado, and Walmart has piloted agentic AI to improve workforce allocation and routing. Prepared food, however, has remained labor-intensive, even as it has grown into a critical margin driver for retailers.

Circus’s CA-1 system addresses that gap by integrating robotic arms, induction pots, automated plating, and AI-powered quality monitoring into a compact unit. The robot can produce up to 500 dishes per load in three to four minutes, using self-cleaning systems to maintain hygiene while reducing manual labor and water use. Heated pickup slots and interactive ordering screens support a grab-and-go model suited to supermarkets, airports, and hospitals.

REWE executives say the goal is to match speed and quality with cost efficiency. “We combine efficiency with enjoyment — turning grocery shopping into an experience of the future,” said Lars Klein, Chairman of the Management Board of REWE Region West, in an official statement.

Energy Efficiency Moves Up the Automation Agenda

Food retailers are increasingly evaluating robotics not only for labor reduction but also for energy savings, a trend accelerated by European power-price volatility and rising refrigeration and heating costs. Industry data shows that energy represents 10–15% of grocery operating costs in Europe, and automated induction-based cooking systems can draw significantly less power than traditional hot-holding or kitchen equipment.

The CA-1 platform optimizes heating cycles and eliminates idle cooking infrastructure, cutting waste heat and peak demand. Circus SE notes that the closed-system setup reduces ventilation load, while precise cooking and portioning limit food waste, another cost pressure area for grocers.

According to public statements, the robot’s compact footprint also supports smaller store formats, allowing space reallocation away from full kitchens and back-of-house prep zones. That plays into retailers’ growing interest in hybrid convenience-fresh formats and energy-efficient store layouts.

A Cost Shift That Moves Beyond Labor

Energy volatility and staffing constraints have already reshaped distribution centers and cold-chain planning; prepared-food operations are encountering similar pressures. Autonomous cooking systems bring a level of mechanical consistency that isolates production from scheduling gaps and equipment idle time, a design choice that mirrors how food retail has responded to refrigerated transport and warehouse automation over the past decade. Seeing kitchen functions treated with the same engineering discipline applied to logistics offers a reminder that margin structure in grocery often changes first at the infrastructure layer, long before it becomes visible as a customer-facing format shift.
