Fuso Taps REE to Turn eCanter Into Autonomous Truck

Mitsubishi Fuso–REE Push Electric Trucks Toward Autonomous Logistics

As logistics networks prepare for a decade of automation, Mitsubishi Fuso’s new partnership with REE Automotive offers a glimpse of how electric trucks may evolve into continuously upgradable platforms capable of supporting autonomous operations. The collaboration aims to merge electrification, software-defined vehicle architecture, and x-by-wire control into a commercial vehicle foundation built for the next wave of intelligent fleet management.

Building a Digital Backbone for Autonomous-Ready Truck Platforms

Mitsubishi Fuso and REE Automotive have signed a memorandum of understanding to integrate REE’s zonal software-defined vehicle (SDV) architecture into Fuso’s electric truck lineup, beginning with the eCanter. The initiative pairs REE’s x-by-wire (XBW) technology, which replaces mechanical linkages with digitally controlled actuators, with Mitsubishi Fuso’s electrification and autonomous research programs.

This shift matters because autonomously guided fleets require far more precise, responsive, and continuously monitored control systems than traditional electric trucks. REE’s centralized ECU design and secure AI layer allow components such as steering, braking, and propulsion to be managed and updated through a unified software stack. According to trade reports, SDV platforms are increasingly seen as a prerequisite for commercial autonomy, enabling faster detection of component faults, real-time safety calibration, and long-term upgradeability via over-the-air (OTA) updates.

Recent data shows logistics companies are accelerating investment in predictive maintenance and digital fleet visibility as driver shortages intensify across major markets. That trend makes architectures built for continuous diagnostics and remote serviceability especially attractive for fleets preparing for semi-autonomous or autonomous operating models.

Transforming the eCanter Into a Scalable Urban Workhorse

The first test case for the partnership is Mitsubishi Fuso’s eCanter — a zero-emission truck already widely used for urban logistics. By layering SDV capabilities onto the platform, the companies aim to create an electric truck that can adapt to increasingly automated delivery workflows, from advanced driver-assist features to eventual route-level autonomy.

REE’s road-ready SDV solution enables a more modular electrical architecture, reducing hardware complexity and providing OEMs with a consistent control framework across vehicle variants. For urban logistics environments, where tight spaces and high delivery densities demand precision, the combination of XBW control and continuous software optimization could enhance system responsiveness and safety.

Mitsubishi Fuso executives note that combining Fuso’s autonomous-driving research with REE’s SDV and XBW technologies supports the development of “superior logistics solutions” and positions the eCanter for future automation demands. The MoU also serves as a structured evaluation period, giving both firms room to validate long-term integration pathways as global supply chains increasingly require scalable electric fleets capable of autonomous operation.

Where Autonomous-Ready Fleets May Gain an Unexpected Advantage

One development worth watching is how software-defined trucks could change the flow of operational data between vehicles, hubs, and city infrastructure. Several regions, including Japan and parts of the EU, are already piloting coordinated traffic and freight-management systems that rely on consistent, high-quality data from participating fleets. Platforms built with unified control architectures and continuous-update capabilities are simply better positioned to interface with these systems. As these pilots expand, the fleets that can integrate cleanly may gain access to priority routing, optimized charging coordination, or congestion-reduction programs that improve reliability without increasing labor or asset intensity.
