Gartner: Supply Chain Planning Investments Reach $4.8M Per Organization
Organizations are spending an average of $4.8 million on supply chain planning (SCP) transformation projects, according to a Gartner survey. This investment is set to significantly change the role of supply chain planners. Leaders are expecting their teams to take on more value-added tasks, shifting from administration to orchestration, and from precision to resilience. However, the pace of this change is a source of frustration for many planning leaders. Only 39% of supply chain planners have migrated to new tools that have been deployed, according to the Gartner Digital Adoption in Supply Chain Planning Survey.
Slow Adoption of New Tools Frustrates Supply Chain Leaders, Gartner Survey Shows
Many planning leaders attribute slow progress to resistance to change or lack of required skills. However, they often overlook the question: “Am I enabling my planners to learn and change at the required pace?” Only 36% of planners stated they “strongly agree” that management encouraged them to try new things and innovate in digital tools adopted by their function. Furthermore, only 37% strongly agree that management treats errors made in the new tool as learning opportunities.
To accelerate digitization, leaders can take several steps. These include reconfiguring planners’ roles, building a community of learning, and aligning rewards and recognition with change behaviors. By doing so, they can build planners’ confidence, giving them the space to innovate and learn.
