Global Logistics Leap

In a bold move to redefine express delivery, Alibaba Group Holding has announced a partnership with Space Epoch, a Beijing-based rocket developer, to potentially deliver packages globally within an hour. This ambitious project, involving Alibaba’s Taobao and Space Epoch, will utilize a reusable rocket capable of sea landings, as revealed by Space Epoch on WeChat.

Rocket Specs and Funding

The rocket, named XZY-1, boasts a substantial cargo space of 120 square meters and can transport up to 10 tonnes, accommodating sizable items such as small trucks. Space Epoch, which has raised over $41.5 million from investors like GSR Vision Capital and Jinsha Capital, acknowledges the challenges ahead but remains committed to this long-term vision.

Alibaba’s Logistics Evolution

Alibaba’s venture into rocket delivery comes as part of its ongoing efforts to enhance logistics capabilities. Recently, the company expanded its “five-day delivery” service to the U.S. through its AliExpress platform and Cainiao Smart Logistics Network. This service, initially launched last year, now extends to several international markets.

Investing in the Future

Cainiao, Alibaba’s logistics arm, plans to double year-end bonuses for employees in the upcoming financial year, a strategic move to maintain high staff morale amidst the cancellation of its IPO plans. Space Epoch, founded in 2019, is dedicated to developing recyclable rockets for civilian use, emphasizing safety, efficiency, and sustainability.

While the concept of rocket parcel delivery may seem far-fetched, Alibaba’s commitment to innovation in logistics could significantly impact the industry. The company’s continued investment in logistics services and technology underscores its determination to stay at the forefront of global e-commerce.
