PepsiCo integrates a state-of-the-art Automated Storage and Retrieval System (AS/RS) to boost efficiency in its expansive potato crisp factory in Veurne, Belgium, marking a significant step in production and storage capabilities.

Automation Meets Snack Production

PepsiCo, a leading entity in the food and beverage industry, is set to revolutionize its Veurne, Belgium factory with the implementation of a sophisticated AS/RS. The Veurne plant, which sprawls over 430,000 square feet, is recognized as one of the premier potato crisp production sites in Europe.

The installation of Mecalux’s Automated Pallet Shuttle system is poised to accommodate the factory’s hefty output, which includes 2 million bags of popular snacks daily, featuring brands like Lay’s and Doritos. The system will be connected to the production area via a conveyor line extending more than 100 meters, facilitating seamless product movement.

Mecalux’s design features a robust structure with four aisles, each flanked by dual racking blocks. Twelve transfer cars, assigned to individual storage levels, will deliver goods to designated channels. Subsequently, motorized shuttle cars will automatically position pallets in their precise storage spots.

A PepsiCo representative highlighted the Mecalux solution’s role in sustaining the factory’s high production rates and supporting PepsiCo’s growth trajectory.

Integration and Management

Further enhancing operational efficiency, PepsiCo will employ Mecalux’s ‘Easy WMS warehouse management system. This software will be integrated with PepsiCo’s existing ERP system, ensuring a harmonized operation and real-time inventory management.

Sustainable Growth

PepsiCo’s Veurne location, with a 25-year history, has been a significant crisp supplier, producing over 72,000 tonnes annually for 13 European nations. In response to the water-intensive nature of crisp production, PepsiCo has committed €7.5 million to combat drought in the West Flanders region. The company’s sustainability efforts focus on reducing water usage, enhancing water purification processes, and supporting local nature reserve water management.
