Royal Mail and Skyports Drone Services have announced the extension of their Orkney drone trial until at least February 2026. The trial, which marks its one-year anniversary, is a daily inter-island mail distribution service between three islands on Orkney, utilizing fully-electric drones. This project is the first UK commercial drone delivery project to be implemented on a regular basis and was awarded the Best Use of Drones at the 2023 Robotics & Automation Awards.
Future of Drone Services
Skyports is eager to continue operating in this region for the next two years, aiming to enhance connectivity and access to critical public services in some of the most remote parts of the country. Alex Brown, director of Skyports Drone Services, emphasized the viability of long-term drone operations and the role of new aviation technologies in supporting essential public services.
Healthcare Logistics UAS Scotland
In addition to the mail delivery service, Project Care & Equity – Healthcare Logistics UAS Scotland (CAELUS), part of the UK Research and Innovation Future Flight Challenge, conducted drone trials in partnership with NHS Lothian and NHS Borders. The Skyports team managed multiple flights carrying laboratory specimens between Edinburgh Royal Infirmary and Borders General Hospital in Melrose, demonstrating how drones can speed up the transportation of critical samples and enhance clinical decision-making.
First UK Vertiport Testbed
Earlier this month, Skyports Infrastructure also unveiled designs for its first UK vertiport testbed for the electric air taxi industry. The company was recently given the green light from planning authorities to build the site, marking another significant step towards the future of drone services.
