Freight Industry Braces for 2025 Supply Chain Disruptions

A survey of 500 transport leaders highlights climate risks, regulations, and shifting freight dynamics in 2025.

As supply chain disruptions become a constant challenge, the freight industry is preparing for another turbulent year in 2025. A recent survey by sustainable freight data company Breakthrough, involving 500 transportation leaders, highlights the industry’s readiness and the key risks expected to impact global supply chains.

Top Risks: Climate Events and Regulatory Changes

The survey reveals that 44% of shippers and carriers anticipate product shortages caused by tariffs or extreme climate events as the most significant threat to supply chains in 2025. Other concerns include major regulatory changes (34%), labor stoppages (33%), and economic downturns (27%). Despite these challenges, 37% of respondents feel “very prepared” for disruptions, while 55% consider themselves “somewhat prepared.”

Key strategies aiding this preparedness include access to reliable market insights (cited by 50% of respondents) and diversified networks of carriers and shipping partners (47%). These tools are proving essential as the industry navigates an increasingly volatile landscape.

Market Dynamics: A Shift to Carrier-Friendly Conditions

Adding to the complexity, the freight market is expected to shift in favor of carriers by the second quarter of 2025. This anticipated change is driving shippers to act preemptively, with 52% working to secure the lowest possible shipping rates, 47% expanding volumes with strategic carriers, and 39% diversifying their carrier relationships.

Carriers, on the other hand, are preparing to capitalize on the market flip. The survey shows that 44% aim to sign more contracts with premium shippers, while 43% plan to raise prices or renegotiate existing contracts.

Proactive Strategies Are Key

The survey underscores the importance of proactive planning and collaboration in mitigating supply chain risks. With climate events and regulatory changes looming large, shippers and carriers must continue to leverage data-driven insights and strengthen partnerships to navigate the challenges ahead. As the market dynamics evolve, adaptability will remain a critical factor in maintaining resilience and competitiveness.
