Brief: DOE Allocates $13M to Advance Smart Manufacturing for SMEs

The DOE funds $13M to help SMEs adopt smart technologies, boosting efficiency and supply chain resilience.

The US Department of Energy (DOE) has unveiled a $13 million funding initiative aimed at helping small- and medium-sized manufacturers (SMEs) adopt smart manufacturing technologies. This funding, part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, seeks to enhance supply chain efficiency and resilience by addressing challenges such as high upfront costs and limited access to training.

Funding to Drive Smart Manufacturing Adoption Among SMEs

Administered by the DOE’s Office of Manufacturing and Energy Supply Chains (MESC), the State Manufacturing Leadership Program (SMLP) focuses on modernizing domestic manufacturing through advanced technologies like artificial intelligence, automation, and high-performance computing. These innovations are expected to enable real-time monitoring, boost productivity, and improve manufacturers’ ability to respond to supply chain disruptions.

Grants to Support Widespread Adoption of Advanced Technologies

The $13 million funding is part of a broader $50 million initiative to strengthen the US manufacturing base. In previous rounds, the program supported 17 projects across 15 states, providing technical assistance and solutions to manufacturers.

In this latest round, eligible states, territories, and state-funded universities and colleges can apply for grants of up to $2 million over three years, contingent on meeting a 23.1% cost-share requirement. Awardees will benefit from resources provided by CESMII, the Smart Manufacturing Institute, and other technical assistance networks, including National Laboratories and Manufacturing USA institutes.

Smart Manufacturing: A Pillar for Supply Chain Resilience

The DOE emphasizes the critical role of smart manufacturing in securing supply chains and ensuring the reliable production of essential goods and materials within the US. By adopting advanced technologies, manufacturers can reduce vulnerabilities and build long-term resilience in the industrial sector.

This initiative underscores the importance of innovation in addressing supply chain challenges. For supply chain leaders, the program offers a pathway to modernize operations and mitigate risks, ensuring a more robust and responsive manufacturing ecosystem.
