Brief: DHL and Diageo Introduce Hydrogen Trucks to U.S. Fleet

DHL and Diageo integrate hydrogen-fueled trucks, reducing emissions by 80%, as part of a sustainable logistics strategy.

DHL Supply Chain, in collaboration with Diageo North America, has announced the integration of hydrogen-fueled trucks into their U.S. fleet. The trucks, produced by Nikola Corporation, will be stationed and fueled at the Diageo campus in Plainfield, Illinois, marking a significant milestone for the state.

DHL Supply Chain, a long-standing logistics partner of Diageo for over two decades, stated that the hydrogen fuel cell electric trucks are part of a wider sustainable supply chain strategy. This strategy encompasses the use of battery electric vehicles, optimization of vehicle usage and routes, a shift towards a multimodal approach, and an increased reliance on U.S. EPA SmartWay partner carriers.

The Impact of Hydrogen Fuel Cell Trucks

The Nikola electric trucks employ fuel-cell technology to power the vehicle’s electric motors for up to 500 miles on a single fill, using refueling technology provided by hydrogen fuel distribution and dispensing company HYLA. The replacement of two diesel trucks with fuel cell electric vehicles is projected to reduce carbon emissions by 80% annually. The trucks produce zero tailpipe emissions, contributing to cleaner air and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.

Marsha McIntosh, president of North America Supply at Diageo, expressed excitement about the partnership, stating that it aligns with their ongoing efforts to decarbonize their operations in Plainfield, Illinois, and enhance their efficiency and sustainability.
