Patagonia, a renowned outdoor clothing company, has announced its collaboration with Canopy, a nonprofit organization, to invest in sustainable packaging materials. This move is part of Canopy’s Pack4Good initiative, which encourages companies to minimize waste and refrain from using packaging materials derived from trees in the world’s ancient and endangered forests.
The Impact of Packaging on the Environment
Canopy estimates that paper packaging contributes to the logging of approximately 3.1 billion trees annually. This rampant deforestation threatens the habitats of rare and endangered species and exacerbates global climate change conditions. Over 400 brands have pledged their commitment to the Pack4Good initiative, with Patagonia officially joining the cause on September 5.
Patagonia’s Next-Generation Packaging Solutions
As part of this partnership, Patagonia is set to develop and scale up innovative packaging solutions. These “next-generation” solutions will utilize materials such as agricultural waste and recycled pulp and paper. In addition to this, Patagonia had previously set a target in 2019 to achieve carbon neutrality by 2025.
