That made sense. Large organisations have had to manage repeated disruption across transport, labour, materials, suppliers, energy, geopolitics and demand. For many leadership teams, resilience became the language used to describe almost every supply chain priority.

But resilience is no longer enough to describe the work now ahead. The next phase of enterprise supply chain leadership is not simply about absorbing disruption better. It is about redesigning how large organisations make decisions, serve customers, deploy technology, manage risk and connect commercial ambition to operational reality.

That requires a different conversation. It is the conversation the SupplyChain360 Summit has been built to open. Taking place at The Belfry, Sutton Coldfield, on 3 and 4 March 2027, the Summit will bring together senior supply chain leaders from large UK and European multinational organisations to examine what the next operating model for enterprise supply chains needs to look like in practice.

Supply chain is moving to the centre of enterprise performance

Supply chain has moved beyond its traditional position as an execution function. The choices now sitting inside supply chain shape growth, margin, working capital, customer experience, risk exposure and the credibility of the promises made to the market. Network design, inventory strategy, fulfilment capability, supplier dependency, production flexibility and logistics performance are no longer operational questions alone. They are enterprise performance questions.

That changes the leadership task. Senior supply chain leaders are increasingly expected to connect commercial ambition with operational capacity. They need to understand where the business can flex, where it cannot, which promises can be supported profitably and which trade offs the organisation is actually prepared to make. The next operating model has to reflect that broader role.

The customer promise is becoming a supply chain design question

Many organisations talk about being customer led. Fewer have built supply chains that can consistently translate that promise into operational reality. Customer experience is shaped by availability, lead times, service reliability, order visibility, fulfilment flexibility, communication and recovery when things go wrong. Those capabilities are not created by the commercial function alone. They depend on planning, logistics, manufacturing, procurement, customer service, data and decision making working together.

That is why one of the critical themes for the Summit is the customer facing supply chain. The question is not only how to improve service. It is how to design supply chain choices around the promises the business wants to make to customers, and how to make those promises commercially sustainable.

AI is changing decision making, not just technology

AI is now part of almost every supply chain conversation. But the most important question is not simply where AI can be applied. The more important question is what AI changes about decisions.

Which decisions should remain human led? Which can be automated? Which require human approval? Where does the organisation need explainability, auditability and control? How should planners, supply chain leaders and cross functional teams work with systems that generate recommendations, scenarios or autonomous actions?

Too much AI discussion still treats technology as the starting point. In practice, value depends on the operating model around it. That means data, governance, trust, accountability, adoption and decision rights matter as much as the tools themselves. It also means the human operating model becomes more important, not less.

Continuous redesign is replacing static transformation

The idea of a single target operating model is becoming harder to defend. Supply chains are now operating in a world where disruption does not arrive as a one off shock. It is continuous. Geopolitical risk, supplier instability, regulation, cost pressure, consumer behaviour and technology change keep altering the conditions in which networks operate. A resilient supply chain cannot simply be designed once.

The more relevant capability is continuous redesign: the ability to keep rebalancing cost, service, risk, inventory, capacity, geography and customer priorities as conditions change. That requires better data, but it also requires different governance. Leaders need to know when to centralise and when to localise, when to standardise and when to flex, when to optimise and when to protect optionality.

This is where supply chain leadership becomes much more strategic. The value is not only in responding well to disruption. It is in building an operating model that can keep changing without losing control.

Data is both a barrier and an excuse

No serious discussion of the next supply chain operating model can avoid data. Poor data quality limits visibility, automation, orchestration, scenario planning and AI adoption. Fragmented systems and inconsistent definitions make it difficult to create a reliable picture of performance or risk. Supplier, inventory, demand, order and logistics data often remain disconnected across functions and partners.

But there is another side to the issue. Imperfect data can also become a reason not to move. Many organisations will not reach perfect data conditions before they need to make progress. The challenge is to know where better data is genuinely required, where pragmatic progress is possible and how to build capability without pretending the foundation is stronger than it is. That is a more useful conversation than simply saying the data must be fixed first.

End to end still breaks at the seams

Most large organisations now use the language of end to end supply chain. In practice, many still operate through functional boundaries, competing incentives and fragmented decision rhythms. Planning, procurement, logistics, manufacturing, finance and commercial teams often work to different priorities, time horizons and measures of success. A decision that improves one part of the business can create cost, complexity or service risk elsewhere.

The next supply chain operating model has to confront those seams directly. It needs clearer decision rights, stronger cross functional governance, shared performance measures and a more honest view of the trade offs being made. Without that, technology may increase the speed of decision making without improving the quality of decisions.

The human operating model will decide whether technology creates value

The more advanced supply chain technology becomes, the more important the human system around it becomes. AI, automation and decision intelligence will not create value simply because they are implemented. They require leaders who know how to redesign work, build trust, change routines, define accountability and help teams move from manual control to more exception based, insight led ways of operating.

That is a leadership challenge as much as a technology challenge. It raises practical questions about skills, culture, confidence, authority and the relationship between central strategy and local execution. It also raises a bigger question about the future role of the supply chain leader inside the enterprise.

Why this needs a different forum

The SupplyChain360 Summit has been designed around these questions because they do not sit neatly within one function, technology category or transformation programme. They require discussion between senior leaders dealing with the same pressures in real operating environments: how to make the business more adaptive without creating uncontrolled complexity; how to use AI without losing accountability; how to improve service without damaging margin; how to build resilience without overloading cost; and how to make the customer promise operationally real.

The Summit will bring these conversations together through keynotes, case studies, workshops, roundtables and curated 1-2-1 meetings. The aim is not to repeat the familiar supply chain agenda. It is to examine what has changed, what is still not working and what the next operating model needs to look like in practice. The SupplyChain360 Summit takes place at The Belfry, Sutton Coldfield, on 3 and 4 March 2027.

For the past few years, the supply chain agenda has been dominated by resilience.
